28 May Online Student Advising
Happy Summer Everyone! I had the pleasure of presenting at the Texas Wesleyan University Title III Summer Institute a few days ago on Good Advice for Prospective Online Students and I just want to share the resources I collected for the presentation. You may find the information useful to read or to share with your students who are interested in online courses.
The first resource I’ll share with you is The 2009 National Online Learners Priorities Report, a national higher-education research study conducted by the educational research firm Noel-Levitz. The study lists general demographic data for online students, online students’ priorities in regards to their learning experience, and their perceptions of institutional strengths and challenges. The report is only 13 pages long but packed with interesting information.
The next resource is an article I found on the DistanceEducation.org website titled: After You’re Accepted: How to Prepare for Online College. The article shares some very useful tips for online students including finding a quiet place to study and setting a schedule. It also offers suggestions for purchasing textbooks online.
The last resource is from the Illinois Online Network website titled: What Makes a Successful Online Student? It lists 10 or so characteristics and requirements typical of successful online students. They include being willing to communicate with the instructor if problems arise and having unlimited access to computers and Internet. This is an excellent resource to share with students.
Do you have any online advising resources to share? Send them to me and I will share them on the blog, or you can share them in a comment on this blog post.
