Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching is learner-centered. I believe in establishing an active learning environment where communication and collaboration creates a community of learners. I strive to be more of a facilitator of instructional methods and tools rather than a content expert who shares knowledge with the class through lecture.

Learning is a complex process that requires cognitive change. My goal as a teacher is to foster that change through critical thinking, problem-based learning, collaborative learning, and teaching strategies that require students to reflect.

I have are several goals that guide my teaching:

  • establish early on what students should be expected to do and what they should expect from me as the instructor
  • pique students’ interests my engaging them in meaningful learning activities
  • promote life-long learning by encouraging students to further their study of the course material
  • provide context so that students connect to the material
  • provide timely and meaningful feedback
  • foster reflection about the subject matter and the learning process
  • use evaluative data and personal reflective data to improve instructional processes

Teaching Effectiveness

Student feedback:

When asked what they enjoyed most about my courses:

“The constant communication along the way and comments he has to help you improve in areas that you need help in. He is always available to answer questions you may have in a timely fashion.”

“This instructor did not combine projects for grades as a group, but rather used the discussion board to bring students together.”
